Extraordinary Newsletter 07/2026: Typhoon Saudel—Suspension of Port Operations in China
It is our regret to inform you that, as a result of the new typhoon Saudel, operations at the ports of Shanghai and Ningbo have been suspended as of this afternoon. The port of Xiamen is also expected to be affected. Consequently, there will be corresponding delays in the ships’ schedules.
Congestion is also occurring at the Port of Yantian, where the terminal has restricted the return of heavy containers.
Airports in the Chinese provinces of Zhejiang (i.e., Hangzhou, Ningbo, and Wenzhou) and Fujian (i.e., Xiamen, Fuzhou, and Guangzhou) also remain on alert and are warning of possible flight delays and cancellations, similar to those that have already occurred in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
On Sunday, Typhoon Narra struck southern China, further exacerbating the situation caused by the previous typhoons Bavi, Noul, and Dolphin.
As a result of the typhoon season—with Saudel being the eighteenth in a row and the seventh expected to make landfall—global container port congestion has reached a new record high. More than 4.3 million TEUs are currently awaiting berthing.
The amount of stranded capacity has surpassed the previous peak of 4 million TEUs recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022. However, it represents a smaller share of today’s global container fleet—or, if you will, capacity.
